Our emotions dictate many things in our lives such as whether we have the energy to go after our lofty goals; if our emotions consist of happiness and bliss then there isn’t a challenge in the world we wont take on. However if our emotions consist of sadness, fear and worry, then we are more likely to not take on any challenge let alone get out of bed.
So lets explore some exercises together that can help you master your emotions and allow you to take on any task, whether small or large!
1) LANGUAGE PATTERN
The first thing we must exercise in getting our emotions in check is the proper use of language (and no I’m not talking about taking English class!). What I mean is that in order for you to have the emotions you want in life you must master proper SELF TALK.
You know exactly what I mean. That little voice in your head that tells you, “you are an idiot” or that “you’re never going to lose that weight”. Or how about, “why bother when you know you're going to fail”. That little voice in your head can have the greatest impact on your emotions. Therefore you must practice the right language use, particularly during self-talk. It’s important that you master the right language when your talking to yourself as that will create the emotions you feel consistently and those emotions will dictate whether you go after your dreams or stay in your comfort zone.
One way of putting this into practice is instead of asking yourself demeaning questions like “why does this always happen to me?” “Why can’t I lose the weight?” or “why cant I ever get ahead?”. Ask yourself more empowering questions like “How can I lose the weight and enjoy the process?” “How can I make sure this doesn’t happen again?” or “How can I get ahead and align my passion with my goals?”. By simply asking yourself better questions your brain will answer them in a much more empowering way. So master the right language usage and you will create the right emotions in order to achieve all that you want.
2) BODY USE/BODY LANGUAGE
The way we control our bodies also has profound effect on how we feel. By simply controlling how we use our body we can impact the emotions we feel on a daily basis.
Lets imagine you are feeling depressed out of your mind, can you see the image of your body? Your body is likely to be slumped over, your head down and eyes focused on your feet. Your voice tone is also likely to be low and your handshakes are probably weak as well. Now imagine you just won the lottery and you are feeling like a million bucks! How is your body language now? Your back is probably straight, voice tone is high, head straight up and well, you get the picture.
So how we use our body has a direct impact on the emotions we feel. Now that we know that we can put it into practice. Simply force yourself to stand with better posture (back straight), force a smile on your face, use a higher pitch voice tone and keep your head held high; are all examples of how we can use our body language to control the emotions we feel on a daily basis. For example, if you keep a smile on your face for 5 minutes, I don’t care how mad you are initially, you will feel better after an extended period of time. Why? Because who can stay mad when they’re smiling! Use your body language to your benefit and take control of your emotions today, trust me you'll be glad you did.
Now that we discussed 2 key areas in controlling our emotions, language and body use, lets explore the last area that has the most profound effect on emotions.
3) FOCUS & BELIEF
The last area we’ll explore is the pattern of FOCUS. What we focus on or give energy to will create the emotions we feel on a consistent basis. The emotions we feel creates the world we live in. This is important to understand because we have the choice of choosing what we spend our time focusing on. For example, if you spend your time focusing on past failures or your inabilities then the emotions you create will be sadness, worry and fear. These aren’t empowering emotions. What if you focused on past accomplishments, the things you are grateful for or the goals you have set in your mind? What kinds of emotions would you feel? Empowering ones for sure!
It takes the same amount of energy to focus on empowering thoughts as disempowering ones. So why use your energy to focus on the ones that create negative emotions?
I understand those pesky negative thoughts can creep into our minds from time to time but we have a choice of whether to dwell on those thoughts or focus on empowering thoughts. We literally control what we think about.
Let me repeat, we have control over our minds. Lets say for instance that I asked you to remember your last family vacation, instantly you can take yourself to that place in time in your mind. So by simply going back to that place in time you proved that you have the power to control your thoughts and where you want your thoughts to go. You know you can control what your mind dwells on, its just a matter of habit and your willingness to direct what your mind spends its time focusing on. The key here is to focus on empowering thoughts such as past accomplishments, solutions and your bright future! You will then create the right emotions, have the energy to go after your dream and be well on your way to achieving massive success.
