Well the answer to that question is simpler than we make it. It’s because we have allowed what we fear to become bigger than what it actually is. We often dwell on it over and over again without taking action and the delays in action has made the thing we fear most, seem monumental. As if we will die from the thing we FEAR. If we just take time to sit back and think it through, we’ll realize that the thing we fear most isn’t terrifying at all, we just turned it into this huge hairy monster.
How many times has fear stopped you from asking someone out on a date? Or stopped you from moving to a new city to take that job? Or perhaps pulled the plug on that project or business you always wanted to start? We often don’t do the things we want because we are frozen with fear. We stay in our comfort zone because as painful as it is staying there, at least we know what to expect. We know what’s likely to happen. We know what will happen tomorrow and the day after and so on. Fear can often simply be being uncomfortable with the unknown or with surprises.
However once you face your fears and are able to control it, you’ll realize that there was nothing to be afraid of in the first place. And once you do so, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Being FEARLESS is almost like having superhuman powers that not many people have. So it’s important to know that if you want to be successful in life YOU HAVE TO CONFRONT YOUR FEARS, no matter how afraid you are of them. The moment you do, you’ll see the biggest change in your life. You’ll take on any task before you, whether small or large. Think about it, no one has ever been successful while running away from their fears and neither will you. I assure you that the people at the top weren’t always fearless and at one point they were fearful too. However they decided to act in spite of fear. Boxers and infantrymen go into war all the time afraid, no one is exempt from it, yet they act in spite of the fear they face. The difference between a hero and a coward is that the hero acts in spite of his fears, while the coward lets that same fear take over him and paralyze him. In the end, the coward has to face that fear forever unlike the hero who only had to face it once. If you take control of your fears, you can begin the path to living an amazing life.
Ok so we know that facing our fears will get us the life we want, the life we dream of but how can we begin facing them and not only face them, but overcome them as well? Well below are a few exercises that you can put into practice today to take you down that path. The path down to fearlessness, the path to superhuman like abilities and the path to an incredible life.
MAKE A DECISION: COMFORT OR COURAGE
This is an internal exercise you have to ask yourself and only you can answer this question. Do you want to live the life you want or do you want to be comfortable? Because I assure you that in order to have what you want, it’ll take both courage and facing your fears. You might be afraid of public speaking, that might be something you have feared for years; yet the only way to overcome that fear is to get on that podium, face that fear and speak publicly. It might be a disaster the first time but soon you’ll notice that it wasn’t as horrible as you painted it in your mind. Of course the key here is to practice. But it all boils down to, what do you want more, COMFORT or COURAGE? Only you can make that decision. If you decide on courage then its time to act.
USE FEAR AS A SIGNAL TO TAKE ACTION
Fear usually freezes people dead in their tracks but if you use fear as a signal, a call to action, then you can use that same signal, fear, as a way to overcome your fears. This is how you can put this into practice; the next time you fear something, immediately take a small step to confront that fear (I know it’s easier said than done). For example, if you fear quitting your job and starting your own company then start a business plan, create your website, do something that gets you on the path to confronting what it is you fear. If you do this often enough, you’ll begin to use fear as a signal to take action. You’ll soon recognize fear as a call to action to do something that you have probably been putting off for some time. Practice this often enough & it can work wonders for you and totally revolutionize your life.
GRATITUDE IS GREAT WEAPON
Using gratitude is a great way to neutralize fear. When you are in a place of fear, simply put yourself in a state of gratitude to overcome those fears. For example, if you are fearful of public speaking then put yourself in a place of gratitude that you even have the opportunity to talk to so many people. Or you have the opportunity to nip this fear in the bud. Gratitude is an extremely powerful way to overcome fear as it allows you to stop focusing on the negative and look at the situation in a more positive light. Perhaps even looking at it from a new angle.
CREATE A WORST CASE SCENARIO IN YOUR MIND
Creating a worst-case scenario is another great way to overcome fear. By asking yourself what is the worst thing that could happen to you, you’ll realize that there was nothing to fear all along. What is possibly the worst that could happen? So you stumble your words? You don’t go on a date with that girl or boy? You don’t get the job? So what? You’re life continues and you go on to the next person or project. You’ll probably find that the worst thing that could happen isn’t bad at all; it was just made larger in your mind. Ask yourself the next time you feel fear taking over, What’s the worst that could happen? Your answer will probably shock you.
EXPLORE WHERE THE FEAR STARTED
This exercise takes some introspection, but a good question to ask yourself is “Where did this fear come from?” Did someone tell you you weren’t any good? Did something happen to you as a child that started this snowball effect in your mind? If you can trace back where the fear started from, you can begin to tackle whether it is something to even worry about? Perhaps someone told you you weren’t any good at something when you were young, but if you look back at how it started, you may find out that person who told you that was dealing with their own issues. Perhaps it wasn’t apparent then but years later its apparent now. Tracing your fears back to where it all started is a great way to understand how it began to take root and begin to tackle the problem.
Facing your fears is something not too many people are able to overcome, if you are able to master this key area of your life you will be so far above the rest. This can propel you into a new chapter of your life, a life that you never knew existed simply because you hid behind the walls of your fears your entire life. Like I said earlier, becoming fearless is like having X-man powers. There wont be anything to stop you from conquering everything you set out to do. Use fear as a trigger to ACT and not to WITHDRAW. Use these exercises as often as possible the next time you feel yourself becoming fearful again, once you master them there won’t be anything you cant face. Good luck!
