LOOK INTO YOUR CHILDHOOD
Taking a look into our childhood is a great way to discover our passion. Why is that? Because when we were a child we weren’t worried about what people thought, we didn’t care what the wealthy were doing and we didn’t care about comparing ourselves to others. We just liked to do what we enjoyed. Our childhood version of ourselves is probably the true version of us. Before we started comparing ourselves to others, before our egos got in the way and before our hearts were broken. Make a list of everything you enjoyed doing as a child and see if any of those things still hold true today. I’m pretty sure many of them will still resonate with you. Once you figure out what you enjoyed doing as a child then think of ways you can work in those areas as an adult. For example, if you loved reading comic books as a child then perhaps you would enjoy being a content writer, cartoonist or author. If you loved taking things apart and rebuilding them then perhaps a field in Engineering would serve you well. Be creative and look at around at the long list of opportunities that suits your interest well.
ASK THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU
Sometimes we can get stuck figuring out what our passion is, so a great way to discover our passion is to ask those around us what they see that comes naturally to us. Often the people around you will point out some strengths of yours that you didn’t even know you possessed! It’s difficult to see our strengths from within but an outside perspective is good to have. We’ll realize that we have strengths and natural ability that we never even knew we had.
PEOPLE YOU LOOK UP TO
This is another way to figure out your passion, look at the people you look up to or admire and see if there’s a correlation between who they are and who you want to be. If there is, then review their story and see how they got to where they are today. Begin to create a plan of how you can begin your journey and follow the clues laid out before you. Most of the people you admire are sure to have material out there on the web or in a published book showing exactly how they got to where they are today. Study the clues and follow them.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING ON YOUR SPARE TIME
This is a great way to figure out what your passion is. If you are already doing something in your spare time without anyone having to tell you to do so, then you might have hit the jackpot. If you pursue careers in the area you already enjoy then you will become wildly successful. Think about it, no one is telling you to do so yet you are working in that area on your own time. If you are an artist in your spare time and enjoy painting, then perhaps pursuing a career in the art museum will be your path to success. Brainstorm all of the job opportunities you can possibly follow that ties into what you enjoy doing on your spare time already.
WHAT DO YOU READ
Reading particular topics is a great way to figure out your passion as well. Often the subjects you read about most shows a genuine interest in that area already so it only makes sense to try to pursue areas in that field.
So there you have it, 5 ways to find your passion. I hope these exercises work for you as they did for me. Once I figured out what I enjoyed doing and realized I was working on it in my spare time anyways, it just made sense for me to pursue it. It should work for you and if you get stuck, here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the juices flowing. Good luck!
· Do I have goals? If so, what are they?
· What do I do already in my spare time?
· If I could do anything at all for my entire life, what would that be? (take money out of the equation)
· What did I dream about as a child?
· Who do I look up to?
· What is something I am a natural in?
