If you run frantically out of bed, race to the shower, and run out the door, you have unconsciously started off your day in a state of stress. What happens next is the usual pattern; you hop in your car and traffic is going nowhere, only adding to your frustration. Why isn’t anyone moving? You ask yourself. “I have to get to work people! Get out of my way!!” As it appears, nothing is happening and nothing is going your way; and to top it off your day has just started. This snowball continues to affect you throughout the day and since you skipped out on breakfast you’re getting cranky as well and are unable to focus on important task you must accomplish.
This is a self-destructive pattern and you must change immediately if you want to achieve your utmost potential. You have to start your day off in a way that sets the tone for that day; a tone that will allow you to accomplish everything you set out to achieve and not only achieve it but CRUSH IT as well.
I know what your thinking; you have no time, you have to drive the kids to school, you have to prepare breakfast and have I mentioned the office is a hundred miles away? Well with just a few minor adjustments you can tweak your morning rituals and get on the fast track to achieving the success you desire. So lets talk about the habits to form each morning that will allow you to tap into your full potential and crush everything you set out to do.
NEW HABITS TO FORM:
GET OUT OF BED IMMEDIATELY. NO SNOOZE
Whatever time you establish to wake up each morning, do so immediately, get out of bed and get moving! Do not press the snooze button. When you hit snooze and tell yourself “just 5 more minutes” this messes with your internal clock and your body never knows what time to actually wake up. This is the reason why you are always groggy each morning because your body is always confused. The moment you set a time to wake up and stick with it, your body will naturally adjust to that time and you’ll notice that you will wake up naturally within 5 minutes of your alarm clock. Your internal clock has been set and surprisingly no more grogginess!
READ FOR 30 MINUTES EVERY MORNING (personal development, motivational or educational)
What we put into our mind each morning will develop the thoughts we dwell on throughout the day. So by feeding our minds positive messages, we allow ourselves to go on throughout the day in a positive state of mind. Not only will be more positive but we’ll also become more creative as we’re feeding our mind new thoughts and ideas right from the start. One bad habit that Americans often do is watch the news before heading out to work; this is one of the worst things you can watch when starting off your day. Why? Because the news is filled with murder and outrageous media meant to grab our attention; hardly do you see anything uplifting in the news. By watching the news we unconsciously go on throughout our day thinking the world is a horrible place to live in and everyone is genuinely evil. I suggest getting a book you’re personally interested in and read for 30 min.
EXERCISE (brisk walk or go all out)
Everybody knows that exercise is one of the best things you can possibly do in the morning to get going but few practice it. The reason exercise is so powerful is simple; exercise gets oxygen to the brain and releases endorphins, these endorphins not only energizes you but make you feel good as well. You’ll notice that you are in a much happier mood and won’t constantly need that extra cup of coffee throughout your day. Not only does exercise make you feel great it also allows your metabolism to skyrocket throughout the day which causes you to constantly burn fat. If you can’t go for a full hour of exercise then try jogging for 20 minutes or bike riding for 30. Sure you will have to get up earlier but the positive effects far outnumber the inconvenience of getting up earlier. You will also notice that you will be sleepier much earlier at night and will likely get in bed at a much earlier time.
Habit # 4
A GOOD SOLID BREAKFAST
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and with good reason! The reason breakfast is so important is because when we wake up in the morning it is the only time of the day that we have fasted. Think about it, normally people eat every couple of hours (maybe every 2-5 hours) while they are awake. However in the mornings, we have just woken up from an average of 7-8 hours of sleep, the longest period we ever go through without eating. So what we put in to our bodies when we first wake up is extremely important simply because of the extended fasted period we just went through. What we put into our bodies first thing in the morning affects our mood, metabolism, weight loss and our brain functionality throughout the day. An example of a good breakfast I recommend would consist of eggs (boiled or scrambled), spinach and lentils. You can also have eggs spinach and fruit (be careful with the fruit because of the sugar). Practicing a good solid breakfast will give you the energy you need to last for the day as well as the mood you desire and the brain functionality you need to accomplish all the goals you set out before you.
GET QUIET (Affirmation & gratitude)
Starting your morning off in a state of silence is a great way to tune up your mind for the day. A simple exercise to practice is putting aside 10 min each morning to focus on all the things you are grateful for. This will give you the energy you need to go after all that you want accomplished for that day. Gratitude is a great stimulant. Without gratitude you can often find yourself in a place of stress, dwelling on all the things that have gone wrong and the long list of tasks that awaits you. Focusing on the things that you can be grateful for will put everything in perspective. If you’re frustrated at your job then simply focus on how grateful you are for even having a job that puts food on the table. If you’re frustrated with your kids, focus on being grateful that they are in your life and have given your life so much meaning (I know how difficult this can be in the teenage years!). Just by making a small fundamental shift in focus and on focus on being grateful, will put you in a much better place mentally and all the daunting tasks before you wont feel so overwhelming anymore.
The second part to this is affirmation. Affirmation is simply a repeated phrase you tell yourself on a consistent basis but with intensity. Affirmation is important because the mind will believe anything you tell it enough times. For example, if you’re insecure then affirming that your confident is the way to go. If you’re struggling through your finances then affirming you are financially well repeatedly will allow your mind to break through of the limiting beliefs. If you’re weight is an issue, then affirming that you are skinny will give you the willpower to go after your weight loss goal. Affirmations will open the doors to becoming the person you want to be. Set aside 5 min of your morning in affirmation and you will be amazed by the results over time.
I hope you put into practice the 5 morning habits, if you do, you can expect to crush every single day by putting into practice these 5 morning habits. Another tip is try getting into bed earlier each night so you will have the time each morning to form the habits. I often suggest reading a book in the dark an hour before the time you want to go to bed. This sends a signal to the brain its time to shut it down. Whatever you do, don’t watch TV before bed and then try sleeping immediately after. You’ll notice that you will toss and turn and suffer from insomnia as a result. This is because your brain is still processing the light, noise and music from the TV and it’s replaying itself over and over in your mind. Get in bed earlier, practice these morning habits and you will be amazed by the new life that awaits you.
